Louise Mushikiwabo
Born on May 22, 1961, in Kigali, Rwanda, Louise Mushikiwabo has emerged as a prominent figure in international diplomacy, currently serving as the Secretary-General of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF). Her journey from Rwanda to the global stage reflects a commitment to language, culture, and international cooperation.
Early Life and Education
Mushikiwabo pursued her undergraduate studies in English at the National University of Rwanda. In 1986, she moved to the United States, obtaining a master’s degree in Languages and Interpretation from the University of Delaware, specializing in French. Her career included roles in public relations and communications, notably as Director of Communications at the African Development Bank in Tunisia.
Political Career in Rwanda
In 2008, Mushikiwabo returned to Rwanda, entering public service as the Minister of Information, and later as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation from 2009 to 2018. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in shaping Rwanda’s foreign policy and enhancing its international presence.
Leadership of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie
In October 2018, Mushikiwabo was elected as the Secretary-General of the OIF, officially assuming the role in January 2019. She was re-elected for a second term in November 2022. The OIF, comprising 88 member states and governments, aims to promote the French language, cultural and linguistic diversity, peace, democracy, and sustainable development.
